House of Smiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics provides comprehensive radiographic services designed specifically for children and teens. Our pediatric dentistry team uses state-of-the-art digital X-ray technology and child-friendly techniques to obtain high-quality diagnostic images safely. We’re committed to providing thorough diagnostic care that helps us identify and treat dental problems before they become serious issues.
Dental radiographs reveal important information about your child’s teeth and jaw that cannot be seen during a visual examination alone. These images help us detect problems early when they’re easier and less expensive to treat.
Radiographs can reveal cavities between teeth, under existing fillings, or in areas that are difficult to see visually. They also show the development and positioning of permanent teeth before they erupt, allowing us to identify potential orthodontic issues early. Root infections, bone loss, and other serious conditions can be detected through radiographic examination before they cause pain or visible symptoms. For growing children, radiographs help us monitor proper tooth development and identify any abnormalities that may require early intervention. This early detection is particularly important for permanent teeth that are still developing beneath the gums.
The timing and frequency of radiographs are carefully determined based on your child’s individual needs, age, and risk factors. We only recommend radiographs when they provide diagnostic information that will improve your child’s care.

Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays for safer imaging.
Images appear instantly on our computer screen for immediate evaluation and discussion.
Digital technology provides clearer, more detailed images for better diagnosis.

We use several types of radiographs depending on your child’s age, dental development, and specific diagnostic needs. Each type provides different information to help us maintain your child’s oral health.
Bitewing X-rays are the most common type used for children and show the crowns of the upper and lower teeth. These images are excellent for detecting cavities between teeth and monitoring the health of existing fillings. They’re typically taken during routine checkups for children who can cooperate with the procedure. Panoramic X-rays provide a broad view of all teeth, jaw bones, and surrounding structures in a single image. These X-rays are particularly useful for evaluating tooth development, identifying impacted teeth, and assessing overall jaw growth. The panoramic process is comfortable for children as it doesn’t require anything to be placed inside the mouth.
Periapical X-rays show the entire tooth from crown to root tip and are used when we need detailed information about a specific tooth or area. These images help diagnose root problems, infections, and other conditions affecting individual teeth.
Digital X-rays use extremely low levels of radiation that are considered safe for children.
Protective lead aprons shield your child’s body from any scattered radiation.
Digital sensors require precise positioning, ensuring only the necessary area is exposed.
We’ve designed our radiographic process to be as comfortable and efficient as possible for children. Our team takes time to explain the procedure and help your child feel confident about the process.
The procedure begins with positioning your child comfortably in the X-ray chair and placing a protective lead apron over their body. For bitewing X-rays, we place a small sensor inside your child’s mouth and position it carefully to capture the desired area. The X-ray exposure takes only a fraction of a second, and the image appears immediately on our computer screen. For panoramic X-rays, your child stands or sits while the X-ray machine rotates around their head, taking about 12-15 seconds to complete. This process is comfortable and doesn’t require anything to be placed inside the mouth.
Our team uses child-friendly language to explain each step and help your child feel comfortable throughout the process. Most children find the radiographic procedure interesting and are excited to see their teeth on the computer screen.
