Your child’s smile hides more than it shows. Between the gums, beneath developing teeth, and tucked out of sight are the hidden threats that only dental X-rays can reveal, and catching them early makes all the difference.
At House of Smiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we understand that a request for dental X-rays can raise questions for parents. We believe you deserve clear, straightforward answers about what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how we keep your child safe every step of the way. Our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Goodloe, uses X-rays as a critical diagnostic tool to give your child the most complete picture of their oral health possible.
What Pediatric Dental X-Rays Actually Show
X-rays, or radiographs, let us see what a visual exam alone cannot. During routine dental exams, we can inspect the surfaces of your child’s teeth and gums, but that only tells part of the story. X-rays reveal decay forming between teeth before it becomes a visible cavity, track how permanent teeth are developing beneath the gumline, check jaw bone health, and identify issues with spacing or alignment long before they become bigger problems.
For growing children, this information is especially valuable. Kids’ mouths change rapidly, and many concerns, left undetected, become far more involved to address later. A small cavity caught early often means a simple filling. The same cavity missed for another year can mean a crown or extraction.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Children?
This is the question we hear most from parents, and it’s a fair one. The short answer is yes. Modern digital X-rays expose children to an extremely minimal amount of radiation, far less than what your child encounters through everyday environmental sources. We use digital radiography, which reduces radiation exposure significantly compared to traditional film X-rays.
We also follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), the gold standard endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. This means we never take X-rays out of routine habit. Every image we capture is clinically justified based on your child’s individual risk factors, dental history, and development stage. Lead aprons and thyroid collars are always used to protect your child during the process.
How Often Does My Child Need X-Rays?
There is no single answer that applies to every child. Frequency is determined by each child’s unique risk profile. During your child’s dental cleaning appointments, we continuously assess their cavity risk, oral hygiene habits, and developmental progress.
Low-Risk Children
Children who have no history of decay, strong oral hygiene habits at home, and consistent preventive care, including dental sealants to protect vulnerable back teeth, may only need X-rays every 12 to 24 months. We always review your child’s individual situation before making a recommendation.
Higher-Risk Children
Children with a history of cavities, tightly spaced teeth, or other risk factors may benefit from more frequent imaging, typically every 6 to 12 months. The goal is always early detection, not over-imaging.
What to Expect During the Appointment
For most children, dental X-rays are quick and entirely painless. We position small sensors or film in your child’s mouth, ask them to hold still for just a second, and capture the image. The whole process typically takes just a few minutes as part of a broader exam.
We take extra care with younger or more anxious children. Our team is trained to make the experience feel calm and comfortable, explaining each step in an age-appropriate way so your child understands what’s happening. If your child has had challenges with dental appointments in the past, ask us about our desensitization appointment options, designed specifically to help children build confidence in the dental chair at their own pace.
